Patras Science Café Promotes Dialogue on Climate Change

On 20 January 2026, the vibrant Argyri Agora in Patras hosted a thought-provoking edition of the Science Café under the theme "Climate Change in a World in Crisis."

Coordinated by the University of Patras, Department of Physics – Atmospheric Physics Group, the event brought together scientists, educators, students, policymakers and members of the public to encourage meaningful dialogue on one of today's most pressing global challenges.

The programme featured a series of engaging presentations by leading experts, including Dr. Evangelos Gerasopoulos, Dr. Hristos Karapiperis, Dr. Nikos Hatzopoulos, Dr. Vangelis Papathanasiou, and Professor Christos Zerefos. Their talks explored the impacts of atmospheric particles on marine ecosystems, the science behind climate change, and innovative strategies for strengthening climate resilience and environmental sustainability.

A key highlight of the event was the presentation by Alexandra Makrygeorgou, Founder and Chairwoman of LifoLyo SCE, who showcased the achievements of the GREENLIGHT Erasmus+ Project (Generating Renewable Energy Education Network – Leading Initiatives for Green & Harmonious Tomorrow). Coordinated by Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University, the project aims to enhance renewable energy literacy among school communities, raise awareness of sustainable energy practices, and promote environmentally responsible lifestyles in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy).

The Science Café once again demonstrated the importance of connecting scientific research with society, providing an open platform where knowledge, innovation and community engagement come together to inspire collective action for a more sustainable future.
